The title of this sermon is An Opportunity For A New Beginning
This sermon is provided by Paul Shafit

Sermon Topic: Becoming a Christian
Sermon Synopsis: John's testimony leaves no doubt as to the truth about Jesus Christ
Sermon Text:     “I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore. Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more; But the master of the sea heard my despairing cry, From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.” These words written by James Rowe so long ago echo the heartfelt cries of so many people today. Many of us have allowed ourselves to take our eyes off the real prize of life. Do you know what you want in life? Are you ready for a new beginning?

1. The Word of God was present in the beginning
A. A little girl asked her father, "How did the human race come about?" The father answered, "God made Adam and
Eve and they had children and so all mankind was made." Two days later she asks her mother the same question.
The mother answered, "Many years ago there were monkeys, and we developed from them." The confused girl
returns to her father and says: "Dad, how is it possible that you told me that the human race was created by God
and Mom says we developed from monkeys?" The Father answers, "That's simple, honey. I told you about the origin
of my side of the family, and your mother told you about her side."
B. Genesis 1:1-3 says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and
void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And
God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
C. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Do you see
the similarity of expression? Is John confirming the Word of God who became flesh and lived among us?

2. John the Baptist introduced Christ to the world
A. John said, “This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth
came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the
Father, he hath declared him.”
B. The people knew the prophecy yet they denied Christ because they were concerned their secular positions were in
danger. They were convinced that the prophecy would never come true.

3. God wants men to understand the message Jesus brought
A. Jesus prayed, “Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him
power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that
they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:1-3).
B. “In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended
it not” (1:4-5).
C. The short form of the Gospel is found in 1Corinthians 15:1, 3 and 4 and says, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto
you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; For I delivered unto
you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he
was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

4. God’s Word enables us to see the heart of God
A. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
B. John wrote, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that
ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (1John 5:13).

Will you ignore Him as so many before you have, or will you make Him your Lord and become fully alive? 2Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” This is the first day of forever. Where will you spend eternity?
