Sermon Text:
TITLE: THE ELEMENTS OF THE HARVEST
TEXT: MATT. 13:1 8, 18 23 1 On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. 2 And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 3 Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. 6 But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. 8 But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 18 “Therefore hear the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. 20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. 22 Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. 23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” INTRO: It’s not un unusual for a farmer to go through a terrible drought one year or more.... Only to have the greatest bumper crop that more then cover what he had lost in that drought !... What made the difference?.... Rain! Many elements enter into the success of a harvest. The same is true of the spiritual harvest. Three basic elements have to be considered: I. THE SOIL: The place where the seed is sown. A. In the natural: there are many types of soil..... 1. Clay 2. Sand. 3. Rocky ground. 4. Topsoil. B. In the spiritual, ... Jesus lists four types: 1. “Pathway soil”... hearts that do not understand the gospel message. 2. “rocky soil”... shallow,... emotional temperaments with no spiritual depth. 3. “Thorny soil”... hearts that are preoccupied with worldly concerns . 4. “Good soil”....people who hear and heed the Word,..... and become productive ground. C. Don’t be quick to blame lack of success on faulty soil! D. No matter how good the soil is,... - the seed will not grow without WATER of the Holy spirit to convict of sin. E. YET.... SOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER BE SAVED,..... because their soil is poisoned with .... B I T T E R N E S S OR U N F O R G I V E N E S S . II. THE SEED: The Word of God A. A farmer pick out his best seed for replanting. Poor seed will not produce good harvest. B. The Word is good,... tried and tested seed... it has stood the test of time. C. Its critics have come and gone,.... but the BIBLE still stands as the best seller of all time. D.“Heaven and Earth may pass away, but my Word shall never pass away.” E. There are plenty of good books available today,.... but good books are not going to convict men of there sin. ... - It is the Word of God that convicts the hearts of sinners. F. It’s amazing… what light the Bible sheds on some commentaries we have today! G. Current events may add spice to a message and make it relevant to the present, ... but current events devoid of the Word of God will never convict a heart of sin ! H. If we are to reap an abundant harvest here at LWC,.... we must sow the seed of the Word of God,... not some well intentioned substitute. III. THE SOWER: You and me! A. The soil may be the richest,... the seed the very best,... but until the farmer goes out into the field there will never be a harvest . B. You can not sow from a barn ! LOOK: The farmer WENT FORTH to sow! C. You will nwver be a soul winner warming a church pew ! D. Jesus said,....” Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in....” E. Certain demands are made of a sower: 1. Time, 2. Effort, 3. Patience, 4. Concern, 5. Prayer. F. “Psa. 126:6 He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him. CONCLUSION: FINALLY: When you have done your best,.... GOOD SOIL,... GOOD SEED,.... GOOD SOWING, .... It is still God who gives the increase. ( I COR. 3:6 ) Only be sure you have done your very best !
