The title of this sermon is Our Philosophy of Ministry - Our Servant Mindset
This sermon is provided by Mike Cantrell

Sermon Topic: Other
Sermon Synopsis: 1. Becoming great means being secure. 2. Becoming great means being selfless. 3. Becoming great means being a servant.
Sermon Text:     God's message to His church is that He is establishing his rule through a people that he has redeemed and gifted for His glory.

In the world - success is measured and significance is embraced through our talent. We are recognized, honored, and put on a pedestal because of our ability or talents.

But Jesus came to redefine the meaning of greatness.

Jesus came to reverse the values of the world.

Luke 22:21-27

"But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Me on the table. "For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!" And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing. And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.' "But not so with you, but let him who is the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as the servant. "For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. (NAS)

Jesus encouraged ambition with the proper focus and the proper motive.

God designed man for greatness - zeal, desire, ambition, drive, success and the need to be great came from God... but he dispels the worldly instinct to exalt yourself, to become self-absorbed, or the idea that being in charge, being on platform, or being recognized by man is the true sign of greatness.

What God does not need is a bunch of Christians with business cards & resumes looking for a title or position.

Jesus reinforces the principle He just declared, with the example of Himself as One who serves.

The best scripture to drive this home is found in John 13.

John 13:1-5

"Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God, and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself about. 5 Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded." (NAS)

What can we learn from Jesus' example:

1. Becoming great means being secure.

John 13:3

"Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God, and was going back

to God..."

Insecurity is easy to see but hard to define. It is the "Barney Fife" spirit that exalts itself and craves man's approval. It grasps for titles, positions, and man's glory. But it is the itch that can't be scratched.

Jesus could lay aside everything, because he knew who he was.

He was defined by God, not by his gifting!

2. Becoming great means being selfless.

John 13:4

"He rose from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself about."

Notice Jesus took his garment and laid it aside. That means he took his role, authority, ministry, kingship, and Lordship and laid them aside.

Many times we have to lay our "gifting" or "talent" aside to serve God's greater purpose or vision.

Paul reminds the church in Corinth of a similar mind-set.

1 Corinthians 15:31,36

"I protest, brethren, by the boasting in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. 36 You fool! That which you sow does not come to life unless it dies" (NAS)

3. Becoming great means being a servant.

John 13:5

"Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded."

Greatness is not telling people what to do.

Greatness is not being seen or heard.

Greatness IS serving - laying your life down for others to see everyone around you walk in greatness.

Jesus said, "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve."

I hope we realize our call to greatness comes from being secure, being God-centered instead of self-centered, and serving in His Kingdom. I hope we understand from Jesus' teaching and example we need to bring our "gifting" to the altar, like Abraham had to carry Isaac "God's gift" to Mount Mariah many of us need to start today by asking "how can I serve?"

Again, we hope this teaching challenges you to serve God with a Kingdom mind-set and perspective. If you would like a copy of this message or the entire 4 CD series we can ship it to you. Contact us at www.bethelclarksville.com.
